The bells at the National Cathedral tolled 800 times this past week in honor of the 800,000 dead from Covid in this country. The holidays are complicated. Often, so much to celebrate and mourn - all at the same time.

When there is so much darkness surrounding us, we can each become lanterns burning bright, bringing light back into our world.

If one searches the recesses of the internet, one can find a genre of urban legend that focuses on our relationship to time while traveling through particular places.

Time slips they say, and one can be accidentally transported back, and sometimes forward, in time. This is no isolated story-telling, but a philosophical inquiry about the place of the spirit lodged within our physical beings, questioning the reality that time is a one-lane highway to death.

Peaceful Passing for Pets holds as its vision the goal that every pet with a terminal condition will have the opportunity to receive compassionate, coordinated care in their home. They are based in Minnesota and are currently dealing with Covid related limitations but have the overall, longterm mission of creating a model for pet hospice care that can become the standard across the US.

Love Memoir is a perfume recently created by Iman, inspired by her quarter-century relationship with David Bowie. After Bowie’s death in 2016, Iman began a ritual of building cairns (a meditation of stacking stones to mark paths in sacred places) in the woods I could cry and release the grief. With her roots firmly planted in the beauty business, Iman eventually began working on a perfume of remembrance, weaving their two favorite scents, rose and bergamot, as in a Victorian mourning gesture. Working on this creation became a way for Iman to process her grief and come to terms with living with her memories.

Far More, a beautiful yet unobtrusive little-known gem of a film from 2014 starring Adrian Grenier, tells the simple yet profound story of a highly successful fashion designer who returns to his rural home town to visit his terminally ill brother. In a very engaging performance from Grenier, his character Sean is forced to confront his own past and his unresolved family conflicts to learn how to re-live more authentically, as his brother’s life slips away.

After Life, a show created by Ricky Gervais of The Office fame, is about a guy named Tony whose perfect life is upended when his beloved wife dies. He decides to no longer care about himself or anyone else however he doesn't anticipate the determination of his friends to keep him grounded in connection.

Only in these days when LSD (and other mind-altering substances) are once again actively being explored for psychiatric and end-of-life distress, might it be possible for Broadway legend James Lapine to mount a musical about a semi-fictionalized trip taken in the 1950’s by movie star Cary Grant, writer Aldous Huxley and socialite Clare Booth Luce. All were known LSD aficionados. Thanks to the wild imagination of Lapine, one can venture to Broadway now to participate in a communal acid trip in Southern California, set to music in Flying Over Sunset!
